It's time for me to spend a little blog-space letting you all know about my love for the TV series Firefly and the movie Serenity that followed. I was a "johnny-come-lately" to this brilliant series, which originally aired in the states back in 2002. In 2008 my good friend Dommy recommended that I try it as he felt that I would enjoy it, well suffice it to say "enjoy" was an understatement.
I absolutely loved this series, it has everything a sci-fi fan could want. The characters are interesting and engaging, the individual storylines and overall story arc are addictive, and the interactions between the various characters can at times, bre hilarious.
Now for a little background courtesy of scifi.com...
Five hundred years in the future, Mal Reynolds ends up on the losing side of a war.
He escapes with little more than his own skin, one trusted friend, and his ship, the Firefly-class freighter Serenity.
Every day since then, his mission has been a simple one: Hire a crew; find a job; and just keep on flyin'. Then, one day, he takes on a couple of mysterious passengers — and his life gets a whole lot more complicated….
The series was cancelled by the short sighted executives at the FOX network after only 11 of the 14 planned episodes had been aired. In a two fingered salute to the idiots at FOX, when the series was released on DVD it sold well and was backed by a number of supportive fan groups.
These sales paved the way for Universal studios & Joss Whedon to produce a film based on the series which won multiple awards and enjoyed positive reviews. The latest news is that the story will continue as an online multiplayer game which is currently in development. Rumours are also circulating that there is interest in producing a second series but thus far nothing more than unconfirmed rumours.
I would recommend Firefly & Serenity to any Sci-Fi fan, a brilliant series and movie and drastically underated by the people who apparently matter.
I will provide more info on the series in the near future.
